Is EVO Really Expensive?!

At this stage, it's tough to count how often we've heard that EVO64 systems are "much more expensive" than many of the alternativesout there...

But, what most of those commenters seem to be missing is just how much is included with the base EVO64 Rel1 board...

  • A top-quality printed circuit board (PCB), with a gold ENIG finish, which looks amazing, while protecting ports, vias and card-edge connections
  • An overwhelming majority of the required electronic components have been pre-soldered into place and fully-tested as part of the manufacturing process. This includes transistors, inductors, diodes, resistors, capacitors, logic chips, main memory. This improves system quality and dramatically speeds up the build time
  • Then there's a fully-integrated ClearVideo64 circuit which every online reviewer has unanimously said provides the best quality video output you could ever expect from real VICII chips (and EVO supports all of them)
  • EVO's multi-ROM is capable of supporting up to 8x Kernal ROMS, 4x versions of Basic, 8x Character sets and up to 32x Cartridge ROMs
  • Don't forget the fully integrated support for dual-SID chips, in either true-stereo or dual-mono modes, with a choice of extended addressing options
  • And EVO is the only system available with support for fully integrated audio preamps, with the NuTube64 and Triode64 modules. And they sound AMAZING...
  • You also get the QAPLA', which is a custom developed PLA that has been perfectly calibrated for the timings of the EVO architecture, including it's SRAM. The QAPLA' also makes the multi-ROM and multi-SID capabilities possible, as well as providing support for onboard Cartridge ROMS...
  • It's also worth noting that EVO is under continuous development, with a vibrant ecosystem of add-ons, such as the dual-VICII module that William Manganaro is making available soon and the incredibly flexible auto-selector module that will eliminate the need to open your case and mess with jumpers to make config and mode selection changes...

When you add up how much it might cost for you to build up a set of similar capabilities with some of the other C64 remakes out there, considering all of the required components, we think you'll agree that EVO is actually priced very competitively.
